Welfare of Animals
The way we treat animals is a powerful reflection of our moral character as a society.
Jim Himes believes that whether they are our companions, live in the wild, or are used for research and food, animals deserve to be treated humanely.
In Congress, Jim will support efforts to strengthen the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s oversight of the companion animal industry. Jim will also advocate for humane farm animal care, including reigning in the overuse of antibiotics in agriculture and ensuring humane treatment of incapacitated livestock.
Preserving the rich diversity of our planet’s wildlife and fighting species loss is especially critical. Jim will work to reverse the recent erosion in protections for endangered species, and to prevent the environmental degradation that puts many species in jeopardy in the first place.
In 2009, we will finally be able to turn the page on an Administration that has aggressively and systematically undermined our legal protections for habitats, waterways, and endangered and threatened species. Jim believes that now is the time to renew our moral commitment to promoting the welfare of animals.
